It’s based on experience.

I have lived in Mexico for ten years and traveled through most of its states. Over time, Mexico has become more than a place where I work. It has become part of my identity.

In my classroom, I’ve worked with Mexican executives who manage international operations while studying English at night. I’ve seen engineers who move comfortably between technical precision and strategic thinking. I’ve met entrepreneurs building companies that operate across borders — often without the institutional support their counterparts in the Global North take for granted.

And yet, I sometimes sense a quiet insecurity — an assumption that “real” innovation or sophistication lives somewhere else.

That has not been my experience.

Mexico alone offers powerful evidence of global impact.

Grupo Bimbo is the largest bread producer in the world, operating across dozens of countries.

Modelo Especial is the best-selling beer in the United States.

Mexican cuisine has become global — not just popular, but influential. Mezcal is one of the fastest-growing categories in premium spirits worldwide. It is exporting professionals — engineers, doctors, architects, creatives — who compete at the highest levels internationally.

What has struck me most is not just competence.

It is adaptability.

In Mexico, as in many countries I’ve visited — India, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Argentina, and South Africa — professionals are accustomed to navigating volatility. Economic shifts, political uncertainty, infrastructure challenges — and still they build, innovate, and compete.

That creates a kind of resilience that is difficult to teach.

I’ve met government officials and medical professionals in Chile whose expertise rivals anything I’ve seen in Washington or London. I’ve seen young programmers in India teaching themselves advanced coding languages in modest internet cafés. I’ve visited factories in Morocco and India operating with precision under constraints that would frustrate many Western firms.

I’ve had dinners in Buenos Aires, Lima, and Mumbai that would compete easily with the best restaurants in New York or Paris. They assume that “real” innovation or sophistication lives somewhere else.

From what I’ve seen, that belief is misplaced.

Perhaps I’m able to see this more easily because I grew up in California.

Today, California is arguably one of the centers of the global economic universe. But it hasn’t always been that way. For the Spanish Empire, California was peripheral — distant, marginal, far from the core of power. Even within the United States, California was once considered remote and undeveloped.

My grandparents didn’t go to California because it was the center of anything. It was a place where reinvention was possible.

History has a way of shifting what we consider “central” and what we consider “marginal.”

That’s part of why I hesitate when I hear assumptions about where talent resides. I’ve seen too much ability, intelligence, and resilience in places that are still described as emerging or secondary.

I’m not predicting which countries will dominate the future. I’m not arguing that one bloc will win over another.

What I am saying is this:

After years of living in Mexico, teaching across Latin America, and traveling through countries that are too often underestimated, I feel more optimistic than the headlines would suggest.

Because the intelligence is there. My focus had always been on getting words out quickly. In real communication, there’s no time to consciously apply rules. Over time, I also discovered that many grammar points I had learned as fundamentally different from English weren’t actually that different at all. Why? Because they’re a fantastic way to build real-world, business-related vocabulary while also seeing thoughtful, positive stories about how Mexico is viewed and represented internationally.

In my experience teaching professionals who work across borders, language learning is most powerful when it’s connected to real stories, real companies, and real cultural dynamics. That’s exactly what this channel does.

Every two weeks, Fernando releases highly professional, well-researched videos exploring the space where Mexican and American cultures overlap — in business, society, language, and identity.

Some of my favorites are his features on Mexican companies that have succeeded in the U.S. (and even globally), like Bimbo, Tajín, and Dr. Simi. He also explores interesting cross-border success stories — for example, how Vicks VapoRub, an American brand, has developed an incredibly strong cultural and commercial presence in Mexico.

He also has fascinating episodes on topics like Chicano English, Asian-Black Mexican identity, and the growth of Mexican restaurants in the U.S.

If you’re an American living in Mexico, a Mexican working with U.S. companies, or simply someone curious about the relationship between the two countries, I think you’ll find it both insightful and genuinely useful.

If you’ve watched the channel, I’d love to hear which episode stood out to you. And if there are other creators you follow who thoughtfully explore US–Mexico business and culture, please share them in the comments — I’m always looking for strong recommendations to pass along to my students.

English, Spanish, or French- Which is easier?

New Blog Post Description

I often hear people compare the difficulty of learning English, Spanish, and French.

“Spanish is easier than French.”
“English is easier than Spanish.”
“French is the hardest.”

After learning and teaching all three languages, I’ve come to a clear conclusion:

None of them is inherently easier or harder than the others. They are difficult in different ways.

Difficulty isn’t absolute. It’s relational.

For example, Spanish feels harder to me than French — primarily because of grammar. Spanish has multiple past tenses used actively in everyday speech, frequent subjunctive usage, agreement patterns, reflexive constructions. The system requires constant precision.

At the same time, I personally find French vocabulary easier — not because French has more cognates than Spanish, but because it often feels more intuitively connected to English.

Both Spanish and French share Latin roots with English. You see this clearly in patterns like:

nation / nación / nation
information / información / information

Those parallels exist in both languages.

The difference, for me, appears in everyday vocabulary.

French words often look and sound closer to English, even when the meanings are not identical. Take this example:

French: raisin = grape
English: raisin = dried grape

They aren’t the same word — but they’re clearly related. Both refer to grapes. The conceptual connection is obvious.

Now compare that to Spanish:

uva = grape

There’s no visible or phonetic bridge to English. You simply have to memorize it.

I’ve noticed that if I don’t know a word in French, I can often think of the English word and slightly adjust it — pronunciation, spelling, stress — and surprisingly often I’m correct. That strategy works much less frequently for me in Spanish with high-frequency everyday vocabulary.

This isn’t because Spanish lacks cognates. It absolutely has them. But many common Spanish words come from Latin roots that didn’t enter English in the same form. English and French, due to centuries of direct contact after the Norman Conquest, share a particularly deep lexical overlap — not just academically, but in many common terms as well.

Research on cross-linguistic influence supports this pattern. Studies show that learners rely heavily on perceived similarity between languages when acquiring vocabulary (Odlin, 1989; Ringbom, 2007). When words look familiar, acquisition and recall are faster.

For other learners, however, French is harder — especially because of pronunciation: nasal vowels, silent letters, liaisons, and the gap between spelling and sound.

And then there’s English.

Interestingly, the only people I consistently hear say English is “easy” are those who began learning it as children.

That observation aligns with research on the Critical Period Hypothesis (Lenneberg, 1967), which suggests that early language acquisition benefits from neurological plasticity. Early exposure often leads to more intuitive pronunciation and grammar development.

For adult learners, English presents very real challenges.

The U.S. Foreign Service Institute classifies French and Spanish as Category I languages for native English speakers, estimating roughly 600–750 classroom hours to reach professional proficiency. That reflects structural similarity — not simplicity.

From my experience teaching English, there are aspects that are genuinely tricky:

• Phrasal verbs (take off, take up, take over — same verb, completely different meanings)
• Spelling vs. pronunciation (though, through, tough, thorough)
• Stress shifts (REcord vs. reCORD, PREsent vs. preSENT)
• A vocabulary system that blends Germanic and Romance roots

These are not small details. They affect comprehension, fluency, and confidence.

So when someone says, “This language is easier,” I always ask:

Easier for whom?

Your native language matters.
Your age when you started matters.
Your exposure matters.
Your motivation matters.
Your learning environment matters.

Every language has elegance.
Every language has logic.
Every language has frustration.

The real difference is not the language itself — it’s the learner’s relationship to it.

And that’s what makes this conversation much more interesting than simply asking which one is “harder.”

Why English-First Classes are Not Always the Best Option

New Blog Post Description

When I learned to teach languages nearly 30 years ago, the field was moving strongly toward an English-only approach.
At the time, I accepted this as best practice. But as a learner, I found that this approach actually made it harder for me to learn Spanish and French — especially when it came to understanding grammar efficiently.
Since then, both my teaching experience and the research have become more nuanced. While meaningful exposure to English clearly matters, research increasingly suggests that strategic use of a learner’s first language can support understanding rather than interfere with it, particularly when grammatical concepts already exist in both languages.
I also think it’s worth acknowledging a practical reality: many teacher-training programs assume multilingual classrooms, where English-only instruction is often the only workable option. That context matters — but it doesn’t always reflect the reality of one-to-one or linguistically homogeneous classrooms.

Why are there few polyglots in English speaking countries?

New Blog Post Description

Why are there relatively few polyglots in English-speaking countries, especially among native-born Americans?
What follows are my own reflections, based on my experiences in the U.S.
If someone asked me what the most useful class I took in high school was, I wouldn’t hesitate to say Spanish. I’ve used it regularly for years while living and traveling in Latin America. Beyond that, learning Spanish made it much easier for me to learn French, Italian, and even Russian later on. (Learning one foreign language tends to make the next one easier, and Spanish and Russian pronunciation are more similar than many people expect.)
That said, I know my experience isn’t typical. Many people have observed that there appear to be fewer native-born U.S. citizens who grow up speaking multiple languages fluently than in many other countries. This is a general observation rather than a hard statistic, and there are many important exceptions. It’s also worth noting that the U.S. is home to a large number of highly multilingual immigrants.
One reason, I think, is that—unlike in many other countries—most Americans don’t need a foreign language for daily life, work, or survival. English already functions as a global language, so learning another one is often seen as a bonus rather than a necessity. As a result, foreign language learning is often treated as something you do to prepare for a trip—or worse, as an obligation.
Many universities explain that foreign language requirements exist to help ensure students are intellectually prepared for college and more globally aware. Those goals make sense. At the same time, based on my experience, I suspect that foreign languages are sometimes used less as a path toward real communicative ability and more as a filter to reduce the number of applicants to competitive schools.
You can see this reflected in many U.S. high schools: several first-year language classes, fewer second-year classes, and often only one small or combined third- and fourth-year class—if those levels exist at all. When language learning is framed this way, it can feel less like a valuable life skill and more like a hurdle to clear.
My sense is that this plays a bigger role in our relatively small number of homegrown polyglots than is often acknowledged. Instead of being treated as part of long-term professional development or cultural understanding, language learning can become something students endure rather than build on.
These are just observations—but they’ve shaped how I think about language learning, and why I believe motivation, opportunity, and context matter at least as much as talent.

How the Superbowl Made Me Look at America Differently

New Blog Post Description

During a recent Super Bowl broadcast, Bad Bunny ended his appearance by saying “God bless America” — and then expanded that idea by visually representing countries from across the Americas. Not because of the spectacle, but because I realized that I share that same feeling about the Americas — a sense of belonging that goes beyond national borders.

After spending so much time in Latin America, I’ve come to think of myself as a true American — not only in the sense of being from the United States, but as someone who belongs to this entire hemisphere. I love Europe and Asia, and I’ve spent meaningful time in both, but I don’t feel at home there in quite the same way.

We share more than many people realize: wide spaces, natural resources, histories of colonization, deep indigenous and African roots, and also early catastrophes — disease, exploitation, and loss. Those things shaped us differently, but they also connect us.

There’s another reason I feel at home in this hemisphere, and it has to do with language.

In much of the Americas, it’s possible to communicate with most people using just three languages: English, Spanish, and Portuguese. That doesn’t mean everyone speaks them — and of course there are many other important languages — but together they create a shared linguistic space. That shared space makes deep communication across borders more possible than many people realize.

Europe and Asia are incredibly rich linguistically, and I love both. But they are also much more fragmented.

As someone who was born and raised in California 58 years ago, I have had the privilege of witnessing this transformation, traveling to Mexico for nearly five decades, studying its vibrant culture, and for the past eight years, calling Merida my home. The changes in the "Mexico" brand during my lifetime are nothing short of astounding.

In this essay, we will delve into Mexico's evolution, from its globally celebrated cuisine to its contributions to science and technology. We will also explore the global imprint of Mexican culture and the significance of English proficiency in the IT industry. This journey is tailor-made for Mexican IT professionals with advanced English skills, who are at the forefront of Mexico's tech sector.

The Globalization of Mexican Culture

Mexican cuisine has undergone a spectacular transformation over the years, gaining global recognition and admiration. When I was a child, only a handful of people outside of the US Southwest and Mexico truly understood what Mexican food encompassed. I remember fondly the jokes about visitors from the East Coast and South who would ask about "taikos" instead of tacos. However, in stark contrast, today's world embraces Mexican cuisine as a global sensation. Discussions about tequila, mezcal, and the nuances of different tequila types have become commonplace.

The impact of Mexico extends far beyond its culinary achievements. Mexican culture, in various forms, has captured the hearts of people worldwide. Mariachis, with their vibrant and melodious sounds, have become a cherished global treasure. Their lively performances and iconic attire have left an indelible mark on international music scenes, reflecting the spirit of Mexico.

Mexican telenovelas, with their captivating storytelling and passionate drama, have transcended borders and gained a dedicated following across the globe. These television dramas serve as cultural ambassadors, introducing audiences to the warmth and intensity of Mexican narratives. Their emotional depth and compelling stories have universal appeal that transcends language barriers.

Mexican musicians, from legendary figures like Carlos Santana to contemporary sensations like Carlos Vives and Natalia Lafourcade, have achieved international acclaim. Their boundless talent and the rich tapestry of Mexican music have resonated with listeners worldwide, regardless of their native language. These artists have become global icons, illustrating the diversity and brilliance of Mexican musical traditions.

STEM Achievements in Mexico

While celebrating the cultural achievements of Mexico is essential, it's equally vital to recognize the country's contributions to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Mexico has made significant strides in these fields, fostering innovation and scientific progress:

Birthplace of Maize: Maize, one of the world's most important crops, originated in southern Mexico. Many of you may find it difficult to continue progressing in your language proficiency when you take traditional group classes that ignore your personal and professional needs.

Utter Frustration: A Personal Anecdote

As someone who has experienced language learning firsthand, I can relate to the frustration that can come when language teaching methods ignore the student's needs, interests, and cultural context.

Not too long ago, I found myself in a language class in Milan, assigned to discuss Princess Kate's wedding dress with a group of men who could care less about her dress. We all just stared at each other blankly until I asked the obvious question: Could we have discussed this topic in our own languages?

The answer: an obvious no. The class had missed the mark by ignoring the student’s interests or needs. It didn’t even take advantage of the fact that they may have been able to teach us something relevant to our location.

In addition, I often found myself listening to complicated grammatical and vocabulary explanations, only to realize that I would have understood the concepts much faster if the teacher could have explained how Italian was similar or different from one of the three language I knew before taking the class: English, French, and Spanish.

The Merits and Shortcomings of Language Teaching Methods

I see proof that the methods used in Mexican private High School work fairly well every day with my students. My students are quite proficient in English, but I can see how these methods are no longer necessary for my students to advance. Why?

The Traditional Class Waste Time on Irrelevant Topics: Like my experience in Milan, you may find yourselves grappling with conversations and exercises that have little real-world application in your IT careers or lives. You may also find out that you could save time and frustration learning complex vocabulary and grammatical concept in English, only to realize that they were easier to understand in Spanish.

Ignoring Cultural and Societal Context: Certain language teaching methods often overlook teaching about the culture and society of the countries where the language is spoken. This omission can leave learners without the insights needed to navigate social interactions and the nuances of language in different professional and cultural contexts.

A More Effective Language Learning Approach for Mexican IT Professionals

To cater to the needs of Mexican IT professionals with advanced English skills, a shift in language instruction is essential. Here's how we can create a more effective language learning experience:

Practical Relevance: Language classes should prioritize real-life situations, ensuring that Mexican IT professionals can apply what they learn in their daily professional and social lives.

Cultural and Societal Understanding: A holistic language learning experience should encompass the culture and society of English-speaking countries, focusing on how these aspects relate to the professional world.

Incorporate Spanish into the Class When Necessary: My students often learn new vocabulary quicker when the words are translated into Spanish. In addition, I have had many students understand difficult grammatical concepts more quickly when we discuss how a grammatical concept is similar or different from Spanish.

A Call to Action

As Mexican IT professionals with advanced English skills, it's essential to share your experiences and thoughts on this topic. Have you encountered similar frustrations in your language learning journey? What approaches have worked best for you in your professional context? Your comments and insights are invaluable in shaping the future of language education for Mexican IT professionals.

As an educator, I also spend a significant amount of time designing classes that are based on everyday English used in the US and Canada.

My commitment is to ensure that every hour of my students' time, especially Mexican IT professionals, is spent learning something relevant to their professional needs. It's time to reshape language education to meet the demands of the real world, and I encourage you to join the conversation and share your perspectives. Together, we can create a more effective and fulfilling language learning experience for Mexican IT professionals and professionals worldwide.

Transforming My Approach to English with ChatGPT

I have just finished a 21-day challenge class to help me learn how to develop and market English classes for Mexican IT professionals with advanced English skills. Today, I want to take a moment to reflect on this journey and the unexpected role that ChatGPT played in it.

When I first started this venture, I had my fair share of doubts. One of my biggest concerns was finding the right words to express my thoughts and expertise in a way that resonated with my target audience. As a native English speaker, I wanted to provide valuable insights, and it was vital for my content to reflect my unique voice.

This is where ChatGPT entered the picture. Throughout my 21-day challenge course, I had to use ChatGPT to assist in composing posts for platforms like LinkedIn. Initially, I was somewhat skeptical about how effective an AI-powered tool could be in helping me create authentic and meaningful content.

To my surprise, ChatGPT exceeded my expectations. The first texts it generated were indeed well-written but a bit too ornate and superficial for my liking. While they were engaging, they lacked the depth and authenticity I was striving for. However, my skepticism didn't deter me from trying to make this tool work for me.

I started providing feedback and making specific requests to ChatGPT. I was amazed at how responsive and adaptable the AI model was to my instructions. With a few adjustments and guidance, ChatGPT transformed my initial drafts into articles that genuinely reflected my voice and expertise. As I continued to work with it, I found that it better understood and mirrored my style of writing.

ChatGPT was the intricacies of the English language but also added depth to my articles. It incorporated my insights, tips, and real-world examples into the content. The result was a series of LinkedIn posts that were not only engaging but also provided practical advice for Mexican IT professionals looking to improve their English communication skills.

As someone with a native command of English, I understand the significance of effective communication in the ever-evolving tech industry. Whether it's for collaborating with international teams, presenting ideas, or pursuing career opportunities abroad, a strong command of English can be a game-changer. My experience with ChatGPT has given me the tools to help you excel in these areas.

Today, I've transitioned from being skeptical of ChatGPT to appreciating its value. This AI-powered tool has become a valuable asset in my mission to provide high-quality English teaching and consulting services tailored to Mexican IT professionals. I now have more confidence that my content effectively communicates to you and resonates with your unique experiences and needs.

Call to Action: If you're a Mexican IT professional seeking to enhance your English language skills and advance your career, I invite you to Book a Call. Most Mexican IT professionals that I have had in my classes pronounce English well enough so that most native English speakers can understand them fairly well. However, on a rare occasion, native English speakers may not understand Spanish speakers clearly. In addition, improving your pronunciation will help you gain more confidence and will be useful if you need to take a TOEFL exam.

In this post, we'll explore some tips and techniques to help Mexican IT professionals improve their English pronunciation skills, with a specific focus on mastering challenging sounds like "th," "z," and "v." We will also delve into stress patterns and word linking to make your English sound more natural. Also, I'd like to address the fact that many times the letter "s" is pronounced like a "z," and this is by far the most common problem I've encountered with Mexican IT professional students.

Mastering Challenging Sounds

The "Th" Sounds:The English "th" sounds, represented by /θ/ (as in "think") and /ð/ (as in "this"), are among the most challenging for Spanish speakers. To conquer these:Dental Position: Place the tip of your tongue against your upper front teeth for both /θ/ and /ð/ sounds. This is crucial to get the correct articulation.Minimal Pair Practice: Work on minimal pairs like "think" and "sink" or "this" and "dis" to differentiate between the two "th" sounds.

The "Z" Sound:The English "z" sound is not found in Mexican Spanish, making it a tricky sound to master. To improve your "z" sound:Focus on Voicing: The English "z" is voiced, meaning your vocal cords vibrate when you pronounce it. Ensure that your vocal cords are engaged while saying words like "zebra" or "zero."Minimal Pair Practice: Practice minimal pairs such as "zoo" and "sue" to distinguish between the "z" and "s" sounds. Pay attention to the vibration of your vocal cords.

The "V" Sound:In Spanish, the "v" sound is often pronounced like a soft "b." To improve your "v" pronunciation:Lip Position: To pronounce the English "v" correctly, place your upper teeth on your lower lip and blow air gently between your teeth. Ensure there's no contact between your upper teeth and your lower lip.Minimal Pair Practice: Work on minimal pairs like "vase" and "base" to ensure you're distinguishing between "v" and "b" effectively.

Rhythmic Patterns and Stress

English has a different rhythm and stress pattern compared to Spanish. Correct stress and word linking can significantly impact your pronunciation.

Stress Patterns:In English, the placement of stress within a word can change its meaning or make it easier to understand. Common stress patterns include initial stress, final stress, and compound stress.Practice Stress Placement: Focus on identifying and using the correct stress patterns in English words. For instance, "re-SEARCH" vs. "RE-search." Correct stress placement can make your speech sound more natural.

Word Linking:English speakers often link words together when speaking, which can affect the pronunciation of individual sounds and make speech smoother and more fluent. Consider these techniques:Consonant-to-Vowel Linking: When a word ends in a consonant sound and the next word begins with a vowel sound, they can be linked. For example, "I saw it" can be pronounced "I-saw-it."Intrusive "R": In certain cases, the letter "r" may be pronounced between two words when the first word ends in a vowel sound and the second word begins with a vowel sound, as in "law and order" pronounced "law-r-and-order."Reduced Speech: English speakers often reduce or "shrink" words like "have" to "‘ve," and "you" to "ya." This is common in informal speech, and mastering it can help you sound more natural.

Concrete Recommendations for Word Linking and Stress Patterns

Listen Actively:To master word linking and stress patterns, listen actively to native English speakers. Pay attention to how they link words and place stress on syllables.

Transcribe Speech:Choose a piece of spoken English, like a podcast or TED Talk, and transcribe it. Pay close attention to stress patterns and word linking. This exercise will improve your understanding of how native speakers use stress and linking.

Shadowing:Shadowing involves repeating what you hear while listening to native speakers. This exercise can help you mimic stress patterns and word linking.

Mastering Word Linking and Stress Patterns is crucial for clear and natural English pronunciation.

Your Input and Recommendations

We believe that learning is a two-way street, and we're interested in hearing from you. As Mexican IT professionals with advanced English skills, you likely find yourself working across borders and cultures, including the United States and Canada. Understanding the nuances of business culture in these countries is crucial for a successful international career. This article will explore the differences and similarities between US, Canadian, and Mexican business cultures, acknowledging the strength of Mexican traditions, the evolving landscape of workplaces, and my personal insights from living in Mexico for seven years.

Embracing Diversity: A Cultural Mosaic

United States: The American business culture is known for its dynamic and diverse environment. In the US, individualism, ambition, and innovation are highly valued. Employees are encouraged to voice their opinions and contribute creative solutions, making the workplace a hotbed for innovation. The work culture often leans towards informality, with many companies adopting open office spaces and flexible dress codes.

The business hierarchy in the US tends to be less formal than in many other countries, but that doesn't mean a lack of structure. While everyone is encouraged to share their ideas, decisions are typically made by leaders who can often be direct and assertive. The American business world values efficiency and time management, and meetings are often short and to the point.

Canada: Canadian business culture shares many similarities with the United States due to its proximity and economic ties. Canadians, like their southern neighbors, value diversity and equality. It is common to address colleagues by their first names, fostering a sense of informality. Canada's work culture is known for its balanced work-life approach, and it's not unusual to see a strong emphasis on collaboration.

However, Canadians tend to be more reserved compared to Americans, often preferring a more indirect and diplomatic approach to problem-solving. Canadian workplaces prioritize inclusivity, and decision-making is often a collective process, with input from various team members. The work atmosphere in Canada is generally more egalitarian, with a strong focus on work ethics and diversity.

Mexico: Mexican business culture, on the other hand, has its unique characteristics that stem from deep-rooted traditions. Mexico values relationships and connections, often building trust through social interactions. Titles and formalities are essential in Mexican business settings, and it's customary to address colleagues using their professional titles.

The hierarchical structure in Mexican companies can be quite formal, with decisions often made by senior management. While the work culture is increasingly becoming more open to innovative ideas and direct communication, it's essential to approach sensitive topics diplomatically. Mexican professionals are generally known for their adaptability and resourcefulness, qualities that are highly regarded in the global IT industry.

Mexican Traditions and Strengths

Mexican business culture is steeped in tradition and has several strengths that are advantageous in the global business landscape. As someone who has had the privilege of living in Mexico for seven years, I have been continually impressed by the warmth, courtesy, and hospitality of its people. The Mexican tradition of welcoming others with open arms and making them feel like part of the family is a remarkable quality that fosters strong relationships, both in personal and professional settings.

One aspect of Mexican professionals that never ceases to amaze me is their ability to rapidly enhance their vocabulary and grasp complex grammatical concepts. This linguistic adaptability is particularly evident in STEM professionals, who not only excel in their technical fields but also manage to communicate effectively in a foreign language. This skill is a testament to the dedication and resilience of Mexican IT professionals and highlights their commitment to thriving in international workplaces.

Furthermore, the concept of "mañana" or "tomorrow" can sometimes be misinterpreted as a lack of urgency. However, it's often about building and nurturing relationships, which are essential in Mexican business. Patience and persistence are virtues in the Mexican business world, and these qualities can foster trust and create strong, lasting connections.

The Evolving Business Landscape

As we navigate the international business landscape, it's essential to recognize that these three countries' workplaces are gradually becoming more similar. The interconnectedness of the global economy, combined with the influence of multinational corporations, has contributed to this convergence.

For example, open office spaces and casual dress codes, once predominantly American features, have been adopted in various organizations across Canada and Mexico. The focus on diversity and inclusion is becoming a universal principle, promoting a richer exchange of ideas and perspectives. Technology-driven industries like IT have played a significant role in this transformation, as they inherently encourage collaboration and innovation, irrespective of cultural boundaries.

Egalitarian Trends and Challenges in the US

While the United States has long been admired for its egalitarian principles, recent trends in income inequality have caused concern. The income gap between CEOs and the average worker has widened significantly. This issue has led to discussions about fairness and corporate social responsibility. Some American businesses are now taking steps to address this problem, incorporating more equitable pay structures and social initiatives into their operations.

In light of these trends, Mexican IT professionals working in the US should be aware of the evolving societal and political conversations surrounding income inequality. By staying informed and advocating for fairness in the workplace, you can contribute positively to this ongoing dialogue.

Call to Action

In today's globalized IT industry, Mexican professionals with advanced English skills have a unique opportunity to thrive and make a significant impact. Understanding the nuances of business culture in the United States, Canada, and Mexico is crucial for success in the international arena.

As you engage with diverse teams and navigate the evolving global business landscape, remember to:

Embrace Your Mexican Heritage: Leverage your strengths in building relationships and finding creative solutions to excel in any environment.

Stay Informed: Keep up with evolving trends in the American workplace, including income inequality, and advocate for fairness and equality.

Cultivate Your Cultural Intelligence: Learn to adapt to different business cultures, as it will be a valuable asset in the global IT industry.

Network and Collaborate: Leverage your networking skills to create opportunities for collaboration across borders.

The future of the IT industry is promising, and Mexican IT professionals are well-positioned to shape it positively. As the boundaries between these North American cultures blur, your ability to understand and thrive in diverse environments will be a key to success.

By acknowledging and celebrating the strengths of Mexican traditions and fostering collaboration in an ever-evolving business landscape, you can continue to make a meaningful impact in your international career.
